(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) voted for the National Defense Authorization Act (S. 3254). Heller’s amendment to protect benefits for Nevada veterans was included in the bill. Specifically, this amendment requires the Department of Defense (DOD) to provide answers regarding news reports that it plans to limit the availability of TRICARE Prime, including in Northern Nevada.

“I am pleased that the Defense Authorization Act passed today and that my amendment was included. Our veterans made personal sacrifices in the name of freedom and deserve answers on any changes to their healthcare. Nevada veterans and all who have served deserve the very best treatment we can provide and should know they will receive everything promised to them,” said Senator Heller.

News reports have indicated that DOD does not plan on providing TRICARE Prime services for veterans in several areas of the country, including in Northern Nevada. This will cause more out-of-pocket expenses and longer drive times for many military families and veterans. Senator Heller’s amendment requires DOD to issue a report to the Senate and House Armed Services committees within 120 days.
