  1. Fiscal Cliff should be an opportunity for Washington to truly address root causes of our of control deficits. Some thoughts in tomorrow's Wall Street Journal, read it here now...
  2. See if your town is home for one of our Ohio Mids or Cadets playing this afternoon in the #ArmyNavy game: http://t.co/zx9x3XrY
  3. Today we remember all those who died in Pearl Harbor and the Greatest Generation that won World War II.
  4. Tonight, much of the bipartisan, pro-jobs energy efficiency bill I introduced with Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) passed the Senate with unanimous support. The legislation will now head to the President for his signature.

    We’ve put a lot o...
f hard work into this legislation and have spent over a year trying to push it over the finish line. More work remains, but it is great to see much of our energy efficiency legislation pass both chambers of Congress. This is a step in the right direction toward making our economy more efficient and competitive.

Today’s bipartisan agreement demonstrates that there is a pathway to advancing energy efficiency, one of the quickest and most affordable ways to lower energy costs for employers, consumers, and the federal government. By making it easier for employers to utilize energy efficient tools, they can reduce costs, enabling them to use the savings to expand their companies and hire new workers, which is of the utmost importance during this time of stubbornly high unemployment. By reducing the energy costs of the federal government, the single largest domestic energy consumer, our bill will save taxpayer dollars and help us address our growing deficit and debt. I look forward to working together with my Senate and House colleagues to expand on these provisions in the next Congress so that Ohio, the fourth largest manufacturing state in the country, can benefit from this pro-jobs energy legislation.

  5. Take a look at the letter below, proud that 42 senators are joining me to tell White House we will not surrender best chance to enact bipartisan deficit reduction
  6. Yesterday, legislation I introduced with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), the End Trafficking in Government Contracting Act, was adopted as part of the national defense bill which is currently pending before the Senate. Earlier this mo...
nth, we launched the Senate Caucus to End Human Trafficking with actress Jada Pinkett Smith. The caucus will bring Senators together to combat human trafficking by promoting awareness, removing demand, supporting prosecution efforts, and providing appropriate service systems for survivors.

I am very pleased that the Senate acted on legislation that Senator Blumenthal and I have championed for nearly a year to strengthen protections against trafficking in connection with overseas federal contracts. This bill will ensure that America’s overseas wartime and reconstruction contracts are performed in accord with not only our mission, but also our deeply held values as Americans.

  7. Today's Washington Post editorial got it right...President Obama has yet to lead on the reforms needed to avoid fiscal crisis, and history shows us you can't do this without both sides involved
  8. As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving with family, friends, and good food, let's all take a moment to reflect on our blessings. As Americans, we are blessed with the freedom to pursue our dreams, to worship as we please, and to express our beliefs. As our Declaration of Independence says, we “are endowed by [our] Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and ...
the Pursuit of Happiness,” and for this I am eternally grateful and proud to be an American.

On this Thanksgiving, I also think about those who continue to struggle through a down economy. I look at the coming debates in Congress as opportunities to improve the lives of all Ohioans through pro-jobs policies and deficit reduction. That way we will have a chance to pass on the dream passed on to us by our parents and grandparents, a life better than ours. It will take hard work, and a little faith, and some tough decisions, but I am confident that America will rise to the challenge.

We also express our thanks this holiday for those in uniform, and for their families who have loved ones far away today, protecting our great nation overseas. These brave men and women in uniform have been willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms, and we remember them today. As I did last year on Veterans Day, last week I had the opportunity to visit some of our brave wounded warriors and those wonderful nurses and doctors who take care of them at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. These wounded soldiers and Marines and their families inspire us with their patriotism, their positive attitude, and their selfless service. On this Thanksgiving, as I have in the past, I will reach out to some Ohioans serving us in the war in Afghanistan to express the gratitude of all Ohioans for their sacrifice.

I wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving.

  12. If you’re on the Hill tomorrow, be sure to join me, Senator Blumenthal and celebrity advocate Jada Pinkett Smith at the launch of the Senate Caucus to End Human Trafficking. We will kick things off at 11:45 am in SR-385. In June, the bipartisan Ending Trafficking in Government Contracting Act that I introduced with Sen. Blumenthal was passed by the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee by voice vote. As co-chairs of the Senate Caucus to End Human Trafficking, we will continue to draw more attention to this problem and use this new avenue to advance a plan to halt human trafficking.
  13. Veterans Day is a time our country has set aside to honor all American veterans, whether they served at the Battle of the Bulge or Inchon, the Mekong Delta or Helmand Province, or kept us safe in peacetime.

Those who have worn the uniform of the United States have been prepared to sacrifice life and limb for the sake of our people and values. We owe them a debt of gratitude greater than we can ...
ever pay back. As the son and grandson of World War I and World War II veterans, I venerate this sacred obligation.

Veterans Day is not just a holiday for current veterans. On this day, Ohioans too should be thinking about our future veterans - today's men and women serving both overseas and at home. We need to ensure we will give them the tools necessary to reintegrate and thrive in the civilian world once they have taken off the uniform.

Here in Ohio, home to almost a million veterans, the sixth largest population in the United States, the men and women of the Ohio National Guard have rendered exceptional service to our country. They have exemplified the citizen soldier that is so critical to our national security and civic spirit.

This fall, many Guardsmen have returned home from tough deployments in Afghanistan, including the 2,100 soldiers of the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team who spent a year there. Other Guardsmen have been deployed to the Northeast to provide support to victims affected by Hurricane Sandy. We especially remember the sacrifices of those Guardsmen who did not make it home from Afghanistan. This holiday season, with Thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner, we have their families in our prayers.

God bless our vets and God bless America.
