  • July 29, 2011 - Sen. Levin, Michigan lawmakers improve fuel economy deal

    Sen. Levin says new auto fuel efficiency standards will "protect American jobs, promote American manufacturing of advanced technology vehicles, and help ensure that American automakers have a level playing field to produce and sell the vehicles consumers want to buy." Domestic automaters agreee to the new standards after Michigan lawmakers pushed for significant improvements.

He calls for steps including an enhancement of federal tax credits to make first-generation electric vehicles more affordable, and potential changes in fuel economy regulations to promote next-generation vehicles.

Legislation fails to pass the Senate, but in consultation with Sen. Levin and other lawmakers, President Bush’s administration announces short-term aid to the industry.

    Sen. Levin leads the development of a comprehensive agenda to revitalize our domestic manufacturing industry and respond to the loss of millions of manufacturing jobs. The American Manufacturing Initiative (AMI) would bring together government, private industry and academia in a robust partnership aimed at turning around the manufacturing sector of the U.S. economy and creating new jobs.  Worked with Senate colleagues to get portions of the proposal adopted into law such as the Technology Innovation Program and Manufacturing Extension Partnership programs and tax credits for bio fuel.

  • 2006 - Sen. Levin helps boost program for businesses

    Sen. Levin works to increase funding in fiscal year 2007 to $16 million from the $13 million for the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for Firms program. The TAA for Firms program assists hundreds of mostly small and medium-sized manufacturing and agricultural companies that experience loss of jobs and sales because of foreign imports. Qualifying companies receive technical assistance in areas such as marketing, financing, production, product development, distribution, management information systems and exporting. Since 1999, the program has helped to retain or create over 48,039 jobs in communities and increased sales at participating companies by $6.2 billion. The TAA for Firms program serving the Great Lakes region is located at the University of Michigan.
