So, now that the Post office is reporting losses of nearly $16 Billion, how are all your feeling about keeping those non-profitable local offices open?

    And how about you, Jeff?

We must give our support and do all we can to empower the representatives who courageously stand up for our constitutional rights and speak up and against those who would strip us of all that is necessary to have a republic for the people and by the people. Thank you Senator Merkley for your good work.

Another example of how those in power are not for the people but for themselves. The greatest enemies of the American people and what was once the American way of life are not foreign but domestic. Wake up and get off your ass and take your country back before it is too late.

@j2callie: Please make sure that you are forward looking in your statements. The Postal Service was indeed set up to pay its costs out of its own revenue. It is currently *not* profitable and cannot get back ahead of the game without cutting back or a big bailout (you can do a quick internet search on the proposed budget and the deficit). This debate is all about the future of the Postal Service which cannot remain solvent on it present course.

Something often gets overlooked in debates over the Postal Service: It uses no taxpayer dollars. I cannot emphasize that too much: In talking about reducing its work force and cutting back its services, no tax dollars are saved.

We all need the post office, to survive as businesses and communities; it is part of our commons, so important our Founding Fathers included it in our Constitution. We

need the millions of jobs it creates & people it serves, to be able to enjoy all our

other rights, The Greedy Rich thru their corrupt politicians & media must STOP

piratizing our wealth, & be held accountable. And the pre-funding of the USPO's

employees retirement 75 yrs ahead must be rescinded NOW!

I hope folks understand that the PO is being punished by the republicans because they want to privatize it. It has nothing to do with going broke. They are forced to put billions of dollars away for 75 years of pension benefits for future postal workers. What other agency is forced to do that, This service affects rural areas most of all. The Fed Ex and UPS stand to gain alot

if the post office is privatized and small post offices are closed.

And you are partially correct. If we allow the Post Office to manage itself, trim unprofitable offices and to curtain other activities as it sees fit, then what you say is true. But if we allow politicians to interfere with the proper fiscal management of the USPS then bailouts and subsidies will be required. Call Jeff's request for what it is: Buying votes at the expense of the National Debt. Its problematic of how we got into this mess.

The government does not borrow money from China or anywhere else to keep the Post Office going. They recieve all their revenue from the price of stamps and packages. Not one penny of public taxes goes to the Postal Service. So, jfmj1, you don't know what you are talking about.
