About Oregon

Oregon was the 33rd state admitted into the Union over 150 years ago. Before the pioneers traveled westward, approximately eighty Native American tribes inhabited Oregon.

As one of the most geographically diverse states in the nation, Oregon is home to beautiful lakes, rivers, deep canyons, deserts, waterfalls, temperate rainforests, old growth forests, fossil beds, sea caves, and mountains. The state’s forests and waterways provide a welcoming environment for all sorts of wildlife, like the cougar, black bear and the Steller sea lion.

Oregon exports a number of agricultural products, including some of the finest goods and foods in the country. From hazelnuts to raspberries, lavender to peppermint, and various cheeses and jams, Oregon has plenty to offer the rest of the country and the world. Oregon’s salmon fishing industry is one of the biggest in the world and known for the chinook salmon, the largest of the Pacific salmon.

Oregon has become a leader in developing renewable energy sources and is greatly expanding production and development of green technology. Companies from all over the country are setting up shop in Oregon, harnessing geothermal, wind, wave and solar energy as well as developing bio-fuels utilizing local products.

Nearly four million people call Oregon home and thousands more are moving to the state every year.
