  3. “In Iraq, the United States spent $345 million spent on health care centers that are largely unused. Then there was the $40 million Americans invested in a prison that the Iraqi government didn't want and abandoned.

and dozens of others have something in common, Sen. Claire McCaskill and investigators contend: They lacked smart planning, proper oversight and, in some cases, competitive bidding.

Under legislation engineered by McCaskill, D-Mo., inspectors general in the Pentagon and State Department would have new powers to combat waste, fraud and abuse when the U.S. is involved in war.” – St. Louis Post-Dispatch

  8. In an historic move, the U.S. Senate has voted to include Claire's sweeping overhaul of wartime contracting as part of the national defense authorization bill currently being debated.

Claire on her six-year fight: “Harry Truman would be p...
roud of what we accomplished in the Senate here today—a real victory for accountability in government, and something I’ve been fighting for since my first day in the U.S. Senate. While these wars wind down, we can’t lose the urgency to correct these mistakes, and prevent them from being repeated in the future. Protecting taxpayer dollars isn’t the flashiest issue. But it’s a promise I made to Missourians, and it’s something I pledge to continue fighting for, with dogged determination, until this legislation is signed into law.”

  9. Gov. Nixon announced today that he’s seeking to expand Missouri’s Medicaid Program. This expansion would provide Missouri with life-saving resources that the state cannot afford to refuse. This expansion will increase Missourians’ access to...
life-saving health services, create jobs, and protect rural hospitals which are at risk of closing from fiscal challenges.

Claire: “I applaud the announcement Governor Nixon made today—expanded coverage will boost the number of Missourians with access to life-saving health services, expand job opportunities, and protect rural hospitals which are at risk of closing from fiscal challenges. An expansion will ensure Missourians benefit from the taxes they pay instead of seeing that money and its benefits flow to other states. This is as commonsense as it gets. The next step is for the folks in Jefferson City to follow our lead. The Legislature should act now to support the Medicaid expansion, and create a Missouri-based health insurance exchange instead of handing its creation over to the federal government. I honestly never thought I’d see the day when the Missouri Legislature would willingly toss responsibility back to Washington and walk the other way.”

  11. Today Claire’s bipartisan bill with Republican Senator John Thune became law, protecting Missouri consumers and jobs from a European Union carbon tax. Claire and Senator Thune led the effort to pass this legislation, which passed the Senate...
and the House with overwhelming bipartisan support.

Claire: “I’m happy for American consumers, who are the real winners here. With the passage of this law we’ve got the tools we need to prevent this tax from happening and protect American jobs.”

  12. "I have so much to be thankful for this year. I’m deeply thankful for the hard-fought freedoms we all enjoy, won both here and abroad, many of them by members of our military who will spend this holiday far from their families.

I’ve never been more honored or thankful to represent Missouri, and look forward to continuing my work on behalf of the state I love.

And, most especially, I’m thankful for my wonderful family—my husband, my kids, and my grandkids—many of whom are here in Missouri with me this holiday.

I want to extend my thanks to everyone in our great state, and wish you a safe, enjoyable, and blessed holiday." - Claire
  13. Claire and Republican Sen. Susan Collins are demanding answers to why the government decided to pay a settlement to a contractor for inadequate and incomplete work in Afghanistan. The settlement of $70.8 million dollars, represents almost 9...
7% of the contract’s original value, even though the structures were described as “unsafe, uninhabitable, or unusable.”

Claire: “It looks like we paid $70 million for a contract that delivered next to nothing. I think it’s critical that we really scrutinize what we’re getting for the money we’re spending on projects halfway around the world.”

  14. Claire, with Sen. Roy Blunt and both Republican and Democratic colleagues, are urging the Army Corps of Engineers to keep the barges moving on the Mississippi River. Many businesses in Missouri and the region depend on river navigation. The Corps currently plans to reduce the water flow in the Mississippi, putting jobs and businesses at risk. As Claire said, “Jobs depend on this critical access, and I’ll keep working to protect those jobs.”

  15. In case you missed it, Claire recently added a new page to her website to better help Missourians who want to attend the Inaugural Ceremonies on January 21 in DC request a ticket through her office. Unfortunately, each office only gets a limited number of tickets and while we wish we could accommodate every request, any person who receives a ticket will be selected randomly. Requests will be accepted until December 14, and we will notify selected recipients by December 17. 16. At a Senate confirmation hearing today, Claire told the nominee for Commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan that infrastructure funding for Afghanistan should be brought home. This follows legislation Claire introduced last year th...
at would have brought taxpayer money home for projects in the U.S., after infrastructure projects in Afghanistan were found to be unsustainable, vulnerable to attacks, and not useful to mission security.

“We need to ensure that come 2014, we don’t have a situation where we are withdrawing our troops but we’re leaving billions of dollars of contract work on the ground for infrastructure—money that should be spent on infrastructure here at home,” Claire said.
