Promoting the safety and well-being, the self-reliance and opportunity for America’s adults, children and families is the underpinning of our nation’s economic security.

The world faces significant economic, geopolitical and environmental challenges. Maintaining our economic security translates to improving health care, education, insurance, job opportunities and employment training for millions of Americans. We need ample opportunities for Americans willing to work and tax relief for working families.

The United States and the world entered a severe economic recession in 2007, fueled by a housing and financial crisis in the U.S. as the “subprime housing bubble” burst.  By early 2009, it was clear to nearly all major economists that significant government action was necessary to avoid economic calamity on the magnitude of the Great Depression of the 1930’s.  In February 2009, President Obama called on Congress to enact the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to provide investments and tax cuts to create jobs and get our economy back on track.  After receiving a nearly $900 billion bill passed by the House of Representatives, Senator Nelson led a bipartisan group of Senators in “trimming the fat, frying the bacon, and milking all the sacred cows” to cut out $108 billion in unnecessary spending and refocus the package on job creation and economic revitalization.  Nelson’s efforts enabled a $787 billion package to pass, delivering $1.1 billion in investment in Nebraska, and hundreds of millions in tax relief for Nebraska’s families and businesses.
