Jimmy Miller, who can rattle off a story on just about any congressman from the past four decades, plans to retire in June. In doing so, he will wrap up his career having done more than most people even dream of accomplishing. He’s had a personal audience with the pope — three times. He’s been to both poles, including three visits to the South Pole. He’s been in the spider hole in Iraq where U.S. troops captured Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Miller joined the Air Force out of high school, and in 28 years, he worked his way up to the highest post an enlisted officer can achieve: command sergeant major. He spent seven years, including the peak of the Vietnam War, working for the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He often sat in on meetings with President Lyndon B. Johnson.
