On September 6, Sheldon and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras held a roundtable discussion at Umicore, a Providence business to discuss the local economy and ways to help RI business hire. In June, Whitehouse introduced the Job Creation Tax Credit Act, which would provide a refundable tax credit to businesses that hire.
On August 16, Sheldon toured small businesses on Park Avenue in Cranston to hear about how the economy has affected them and to discuss legislation he has introduced to create jobs. Sheldon discussed his successful fight to preserve Social Security and Medicare benefits in the recent debt ceiling negotiations, and his efforts to help Rhode Island businesses hire more workers by establishing a Job Creation Tax Credit.
On November 21, Sheldon visited with students at Rhode Island College to hear about how the Pell Grant program has helped them, and discussed his efforts in the Senate to protect these important benefits from being cut.
On October 23, Sheldon hosted a community dinner in Providence to listen to local residents’ concerns and to take questions. Sheldon discussed his fight to preserve Social Security and Medicare benefits, and his efforts to support Rhode Island manufacturing jobs by cracking down on China’s unfair currency manipulation.
On October 24, Sheldon heard from Olneyville small business owners about how the economy has affected them, and about what they need to succeed and grow.
Sheldon visited East Providence, Johnston, and Warwick seniors to discuss his efforts to preserve Social Security and Medicare benefits, crack down on Medicare fraud and abuse, make prescription drugs more affordable by allowing Medicare to negotiate prices with drug companies, and other issues important to seniors.
On October 25, Sheldon visited seniors in West Warwick and Cumberland to discuss the Social Security Administration’s announcement that seniors and disabled citizens in Rhode Island, as well as throughout the country, will receive an increase in their benefits next year for the first time since 2009.
On November 4, Sheldon and Senator Reed participated in a walking tour of the former Rocky Point Amusement Park property to discuss ideas with local officials and members of the Small Business Administration (SBA) on ways to preserve the historic property.
