  1. This week's cover photo is of the Scottsbluff National Monument. It was sent in by Mel Flick of Mitchell, Nebraska.
  2. Stephanie and I extend our sincerest thoughts and prayers to our good friends Mike and Mandi during this difficult time. His decision to set aside his campaign to focus on the far more important duties as a husband and father is yet another example of his exemplary character.
  3. In Case You Missed It: Yesterday I spoke with KLIN's Kevin Thomas about the National Defense Authorization bill that passed in the Senate and the fiscal cliff. You can listen to our discussion HERE: http://www.klin.com/topic/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=6147170
  4. TUNE IN: I'll be joining KLIN's Drive Time Lincoln this evening at 5:10 Central to talk about the fiscal cliff and other news of the day. http://www.klin.com/
  5. I want to thank all of the classes, church groups, offices and individuals who participated in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program this year. Nearly 2,000 cards were dropped off to my state offices for delivery to service members overseas this Christmas. If you want to participate, you have until Friday to send your cards to the Red Cross.

  6. Today I had the honor of meeting with Omaha native Sgt. Saral Shrestha and his wife. Sgt. Shrestha was awarded the US Army Soldier of the Year. I thanked Sgt. Shrestha and his family for their sacrifice on behalf of our great country. We are a nation truly blessed by the bravery and courage of all our men and women in uniform.

  7. Our men and women in uniform put themselves in harm's way protecting our freedoms and way of life. They know their mission will not always be easy, but returning home shouldn't be hard. My amendments seek to ease that transition and serve as a small token of our appreciation. In addition, I am pleased this bill moves forward construction of the new STRATCOM building.
  8. While I applaud the intent of protecting the rights of the disabled, we have established laws that do so in our country and I still have serious reservations about this treaty’s potential impact on U.S. sovereignty, parental rights and the sanctity of life.
  9. As many of our military heroes return home to civilian life, it’s important that we do all we can to ensure their success. By streamlining Department of Defense training practices and state requirements for similar civilian jobs, this amend...
ment removes roadblocks for veterans using the skills gained in the military as civilians. It’s a small way to say "thank you" to our returning service members and I’m glad the Senate approved this common-sense measure.

  11. Today, I had the opportunity to meet with some of our state's veterans at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home. These brave veterans and their families have sacrificed so much for our country and I believe it is so important to remember those sacrifices this time of year when many of us are blessed to spend this season with our loved ones. I wish them and all our veterans a very happy holiday season.

  15. Today I launched a page on my Senate website (www.johanns.senate.gov) with information about the fiscal cliff and a comment form. The website will be updated with developments as Congress and the Administration continue to work to address our country’s fiscal situation. 17. Today, I joined my colleague Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) in filing an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act to clear hurdles for returning veterans in search of civilian jobs. The amendment, Helping Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Return to Employment (HIRE) at Home Act, encourages states to consider the training service members receive during active duty when determining eligibility for state licenses and certifications.
  18. This week’s photo shows the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument that spans Interstate 80 near Kearney. It was submitted by Kerri Garrison of Kearney.
