Boxer Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Consider Marriage Equality
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today issued the following statement after the Supreme Court announced it will consider two important cases regarding marriage equality, including constitutional challenges to California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act:
“I sincerely hope that the Supreme Court finds that both of these laws – Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act – violate the promise of equal protection guaranteed by the Constitution. I believe support for marriage equality keeps growing stronger nationwide because it is a matter of fairness and justice.”
Senator Boxer was one of 14 Senators who voted against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) back in 1996, and is a cosponsor of legislation to repeal the discriminatory law.
