Message From Senator Burr

As we welcome a new year, we also welcome the start of a new Congress. On Wednesday, I was sworn in to serve the people of North Carolina for another six years. I am humbled and honored for this opportunity, and my main priorities as we kick off the 112^th Congress are tackling our growing debt and working on sound policies to encourage job growth.

Over the holidays, President Obama signed a bill I cosponsored with Senators Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Scott Brown (R-MA), Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), and Susan Collins (R-ME) to help correct problems of unmarked and poorly marked graves at Arlington National Cemetery. The bill directs the Secretary of the Army to review and report to Congress on the progress being made at Arlington to fix errors in burial records and improve contracts oversight at the cemetery.

The neglect at Arlington Cemetery is a tragedy that has caused significant heartache for families who have already sacrificed for our country. Fallen soldiers and their families deserve the best that we can give them. Now that this bill has been signed into law, we are one step closer to correcting the wrongs that have already occurred.

Earlier this week, S. 3447, the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Improvements Act of 2010 was also signed into law. This new legislation makes the Post-9/11 GI Bill work better for military personnel, veterans, and their families. These improvements will help servicemembers transition to civilian life and excel just as they did while serving in the military.
