  1. Yesterday, I voted against a treaty that would have jeopardized U.S. sovereignty and the ability of American families to make decisions on their own regarding what is best for them and their family members. The stated goal of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) Treaty was to protect the rights of the disabled, but in reality it would have done nothing to strengthen ex...
isting laws and protections and would have had the adverse effect of opening up our laws to international inspection and review from countries such as Cuba, China, and Syria among others. America is already a beacon to the rest of the world when it comes to caring for citizens with disabilities, why would we allow nations with such abysmal human rights records to have a say in how we care for our own disabled citizens?

I strongly support the rights and protections of disabled American citizens, and I am proud that our nation has concrete and robust laws in place to advance the cause of the disabled. During my time in Congress, I have supported – and participated in authoring – laws and programs that make a real difference in the everyday lives of the disabled, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Special Olympics Sport and Empowerment Act, and the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act. The United States is a world leader when it comes to care for our disabled citizens, and we do not need to ratify a treaty that jeopardizes our sovereignty to prove that. The best thing we can do is continue to be the gold standard for protecting the rights of those with disabilities and let our example serve to influence other nations to do the right thing as well.

    Message From Senator Burr

With only a few weeks left in the 112th Congress the Senate has a lot on its plate, but very little progress was made this week on the most pressing issue facing our nation - the impending fiscal cliff. As you know, unless Congress acts quickly, every American will experience a perfect storm of unprecedented tax increases and automatic cuts to spending on everything from defense to Medicare on January 1, 2013.

Unfortunately, despite the severity of this situation, many in Washington are still unwilling to work together to reach a deal that will keep our nation from going over the fiscal cliff, putting our economy in an even more perilous situation than it is in now. On Thursday, President Obama put forth a proposal that calls for a massive $1.6 trillion tax increase (affecting not just the wealthiest 2%), more so-called “stimulus” spending by the federal government, and the ability to raise the debt limit without Congressional approval. Taxing Americans more just to spend more is not going to reduce budget deficits, and our $16 trillion national debt will continue to climb without any congressional oversight.

If we are serious about addressing our nation’s financial problems and avoiding the fiscal cliff, one of the first and most important things we must address is our broken and burdensome tax code. We need to simplify the tax code, eliminate tax loopholes, and lower rates so that small businesses can grow and families get a break. Raising taxes - on anyone - will not address the deep, fundamental problems in our tax system.

Additionally, and equally as important, reductions in spending must be part of any serious deal if the goal is to improve our fiscal situation and put our economy back on track. I am hopeful we can avoid the unprioritized sequestration cuts that would go into effect if no deal is reached, and I support spending cuts along the lines of those outlined by Bowles-Simpson commission. However, Democrats have been unwilling to put a serious deficit reduction offer on the table so far, and the President’s most recent proposal includes another round of stimulus spending that will cost taxpayers $50 billion in the next year alone.

This is a serious issue, and the outcome – be it a solution or the result of what will happen if we go off the fiscal cliff – will have long reaching effects on our economy and on generations of Americans to come. I am hopeful a suitable solution can be reached, but the lack of progress thus far is not encouraging.

  3. On this Thanksgiving Day, let us reflect on what we as a nation have to be grateful for and give thanks to God our Creator and to the brave men and women who have come before us and sacrificed their lives for our freedoms and our security. As Americans, we enjoy rights and liberties unheard of in many parts of the world, and we have a democracy that puts the power of an elected government in the ...
hands of the people. Regardless of your political leaning, what we experienced on November 6 of this year – a peaceful, democratic election – is a foreign concept to people living in many countries across the world. Even today, there are many men and women who are separated from their families because they are serving our nation in order to keep us safe and free.

Please keep those brave Americans and their families in your thoughts and prayers, and remember the debt of gratitude we owe them when they return home. Also, please keep in mind our fellow Americans who are struggling to make ends meet, and do what you can to help them however possible. Ours is a great nation because of the sacrifices made by all of us – both the brave souls in uniform and your friends and neighbors who do what they can to provide for those who are less fortunate than they. This Thanksgiving, remember all that we have to be thankful for and commit yourself to building upon those things and make this nation even greater for the next generation.

  4. As North Carolinians, we are proud to claim many of our country's servicemen and women, active and retired, as our own. In addition to serving our country and defending the freedoms we hold so dear, they are our neighbors, friends, parents, children, co-workers, and siblings.

Today, and everyday we thank our nation’s veterans for their service, we commemorate their dedication and sacrifice, and ...
we remember those who lost their lives in service to their country. We also send our thoughts and prayers out to those men and women in uniform today defending our country here at home and serving in countries across the globe, often in harm's way.

Our nation’s defenders have endured the pain of being separated from their families and loved ones, the trials of repeated deployments, and the harsh realities of combat. They have done so bravely, quietly and professionally for generation after generation. Veterans Day is more than a day to commemorate the service of America's defenders; it also serves as a reminder of all that we owe them as a nation.

Our mission as citizens is to do all we can to ensure veterans are treated with respect, receive the care and support they deserve, and are again inspired to accomplish great things for the nation in the years to come. God bless America, and God bless her defenders.
