Update: Donovan Confirms Obama Administration to Request Federal Aid from CongressLautenberg Press Office, 202-224-3224Wednesday, December 05, 2012
WASHINGTON, D.C.—At a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing today, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan confirmed that the Obama Administration will make a request to Congress this week for emergency aid to begin covering the costs of recovering and rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy. U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) pressed Secretary Donovan for the level of funding expected from the White House, and called for the fast release of that information. Secretary Donovan responded that the numbers are still being finalized in consultation with leaders in New Jersey and New York. “It is welcome news from Secretary Donovan that a funding request is on the way to Congress after careful consideration by the President. Once we receive the formal request for emergency aid, we will evaluate the details and put Congress on track to pass a strong disaster relief bill before the end of the year,” said Lautenberg, Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, which held today's hearing. On November 13, Lautenberg led a letter with 12 other Senators from states impacted by Superstorm Sandy calling on President Obama to submit a request for disaster aid. ###
