State Department Responds To Ros-Lehtinen On Jon Hammar Case But Fails To Explain What Efforts Are Being Undertaken To Get Jon Home; Ileana Says Jon Has Suffered Enough & All Relevant Federal Agencies Should Be Helping Him

Miami, Florida – After her office received a response to her original inquiry to the U.S. State Department regarding the continued unjust detention in Mexico of U.S. Marine Jon Hammar, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) issued the following statement:

Said Ros-Lehtinen, “I thank the State Department for its prompt response but I am disappointed that it failed to mention what efforts are being undertaken to seek Jon’s release from the Mexican jail. The Hammar family has suffered a great deal since their son’s unjust incarceration in August and the details they have provided to my office are gripping and a clear abuse of Jon’s human rights.

The State Department must do more in this case and work incessantly until Jon is reunited with his family in South Florida. I will be reaching out to the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) so it too can provide some answers as to why he was arrested after CBP instructed him to contact Mexican authorities to clear the weapon and then ends up arrested and in jail. None of these federal agencies should rest until Jon is out of Mexico, out of danger and with his family once again. I know I won’t rest until justice is done and Jon is home.”
