Veterans History ProjectPreserving the History of American Wartime Veterans
Senator Lautenberg is collaborating with the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress to preserve the stories and histories of New Jersey veterans. The project works to collect, preserve and make accessible the personal, first-hand accounts of American wartime veterans. This includes a collection of video and audio recordings, letters, diaries, photographs, maps, drawings and other documents for archiving. The program does not currently accept medals or uniforms. A web page is created for each veteran who contributes an interview, memoir, or historical document. The page includes service history and other information about each veteran. The entire database can be accessed here: www.loc.gov/vets.
Sen. Lautenberg's Story As a World War II veteran, Senator Lautenberg shared his experiences with the Veterans History Project during an interview in October 2007. A clip of Sen. Lautenberg's story can be found below, and the full interview is preserved in the Veteral History Project archive.
How to Participate More than 70,000 veteran stories have been collected in the project's first 10 years, including 1,100 from New Jersey. With your help, Senator Lautenberg hopes to capture and preserve the stories of thousands of New Jersey veterans. New Jersey veterans who are interested in participating, and individuals who wish to volunteer to conduct interviews and collect historical documents should contact Senator Lautenberg's office.
A Champion for Veterans
Throughout his time in the Senate, Senator Lautenberg has worked hard to ensure our brave men and women in uniform have the support and services they need while on the battlefield and after they return home. Senator Lautenberg helped write the new Post- 9/11 G.I. Bill to provide first-rate education benefits to troops that have served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also authored legislation, which was signed into law, to provide payments to service members affected by the Army's stop loss policy, and has introduced a bill to ensure that all service members who are deployed into combat receive appropriate mental health support.
