Recognized by National Breast Cancer Coalition for his leadership on Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act

WASHINGTON – At a Capitol Hill ceremony this week, Congressman Charles F. Bass (NH-02) was honored by the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) for his leadership on advancing bipartisan legislation to prevent breast cancer and streamline breast cancer research. Bass was one of only nine Members and Senators to receive the award.

Bass said, "I am truly honored to be recognized by the National Breast Cancer Coalition, but the NBCC and its members across the country – including its dedicated members right here in New Hampshire – deserve the credit for helping to increase awareness of breast cancer and fight for a cure. Most of us know someone who has been affected by this horrible disease; for me, it was my mother.

"I'm proud to be a part of a legislative effort with many of my colleagues to identify underdeveloped areas of research and ensure federal programs and private foundations are funding the most promising projects. Working together, we can move closer to a cure, and I will continue to advocate for passage of the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act."

Nancy Ryan, the President of the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition and the National Breast Cancer Coalition Field Coordinator, said, "Congressman Bass earned the National Breast Cancer Coalition's Congressional Award for becoming a lead co-sponsor of H.R. 3067, the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act. H.R. 3067 is the legislative component of "Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®," the National Breast Cancer Coalition's strategic initiative to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020. The New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition and National Breast Cancer Coalition advocates across the country are proud of the Congressman's leadership on this legislation and we will continue working with him to pass the bill this year."

With his support, we know this bill will become law so we can do the necessary work to save women's lives," said Fran Visco, 24-year breast cancer survivor and President of the National Breast Cancer Coalition.

Bass and his Democratic colleague from California, Rep. Karen Bass, introduced bipartisan legislation (H.R. 3067, the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act) last fall to help identify scientific advances to prevent breast cancer. Specifically, the legislation would create a temporary commission to focus on the general prevention of breast cancer by streamlining research to avoid duplication of efforts and ensure the most promising projects receive existing federal and private funds.
