WASHINGTON – Congressman Charles F. Bass (NH-02) issued the following statement this afternoon after the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (or "Supercommittee") announced it had failed to reach an agreement in finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction measures by this week's deadline.

Bass said:

"I am extremely disappointed that the Supercommittee was unable to find common ground and work together to find ways to reduce the deficit. This was an excellent opportunity to show the American people that Washington could put aside partisan differences and get to work on stopping the runaway spending train. The citizens of our nation expected compromise and solutions, not disagreement and failure by the committee.

"No one said this would be easy, and I didn't come back to Congress to avoid tough decisions. That's why I joined 99 of my colleagues to send a message to the Supercommittee to "go big" in finding savings by keeping everything on the table. I don't want to leave our children a mountain of debts and deficits that will threaten their future opportunities and growth. I was prepared to take a careful look at the Supercommittee's proposal and remain open to ideas to cut our deficit and get spending under control; sadly, the committee was not."
