WASHINGTON – Congressman Charles F. Bass (NH-02) issued the following statement today after the House of Representatives failed to pass a "clean" debt limit bill that would have raised the debt ceiling without enacting spending cuts or deficit reduction measures.

Bass said:

"The out-of-control federal spending stops here. We cannot continue along this path without taking serious and practical measures to reduce spending and pay down our national debt. It is irresponsible to simply enable more borrowing while sending the unpaid bills to our children and grandchildren without addressing the roots of the problem.

"I believe we must combine any future debt increase with definitive spending cuts and reforms that will allow our nation to meet its commitments while also lifting the burden our current debt has on economic growth and job creation."
