Congressman Salazar honors West Slope Honor Flight veterans in Washington, DC today

Joins the Grand Junction-based veterans group at the World War II memorial

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman John Salazar met with approximately 150 West Slope veterans with the Grand Junction-based chapter of Honor Flight. Honor Flight is an organization whose mission is to transport America's veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices. Congressman Salazar, a Vietnam-era veteran joined members of the West Slope chapter of Honor Flight as they visited the World War II memorial in Washington D.C. with other members of the Colorado chapter of Honor Flight.

During the visit, Congressman Salazar made the following statement:

“It is an honor to welcome Colorado World War II veterans to their memorial in our nation’s capital.  This monument stands in honor and remembrance of the noble duty these men and women performed in the name of freedom.  In the world’s time of need these heroes answered the call of duty and showed the world the bravery and solidarity Americans are capable of.”

Before leaving the memorial, Congressman Salazar took time to look up the name of his father Henry Salazar, himself a World War II Staff Sergeant.

Each year, as our veteran population ages, we lose more and more of our World War II heroes.  Now almost 65 years since the end of that trying time in our nation’s history, many of the youngest are now in their 80’s.  For many, Honor Flight provides the only opportunity these veterans have to see the memorial.
