Salazar & Markey announce $6 Million for Arkansas Valley Conduit approved by Energy and Water Subcommittee

Salazar uses Appropriations seat to bring funding to Southern Colorado

WASHINGTON, DC –Today, Congressman John Salazar and Congresswoman Betsy Markey announced a $6 million appropriation for the Arkansas Valley Conduit has been approved by the House Appropriations Energy and Water Subcommittee.  The Arkansas Valley Conduit (Conduit) is designed to provide clean drinking water to approximately 40 cities, towns and water providers in the lower Arkansas River Valley.  The Conduit will begin at Pueblo Reservoir, travel east approximately 140 miles, delivering water to the various communities along the way.  These communities are in dire need of a source of water that will help them comply with the Clean Drinking Water Act in a manner that they can afford.  Every community that will receive water from the Conduit is currently rated below the 85 percent level of Average Household Income. This round of Conduit funding will be used to complete a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review. The funding will now go to the full Appropriations Committee for approval.
After decades of political back and forth and broken promises to the communities, this is now the second year in a row that Salazar and Markey have secured funding for the Conduit.
Congressman Salazar offered the following comment on the news:
“The reason I fought to get on the Appropriations Committee was so that I could fight to fund projects that will help my constituents. I am excited that we are now able to appropriate money to move the Conduit forward. Water is the lifeblood of our communities, our state and our nation. This is a promise that is long overdue, since 1962 to be exact, and it is time that these communities in Southern Colorado have the clean reliable water delivery system they were promised. Some politicians are critical of federal funding, but I would like to see them come to Southeast Colorado and tell the people they don’t deserve clean drinking water.  As long as I serve in Congress, I will work to complete this vital project. ”
Congresswoman Markey offered the following comment on the news:
“Water sustains our farms, our families and our communities in Colorado.  After decades of work and decades of waiting, this critical project is finally moving forward. Construction of the conduit will help ensure clean, reliable water for the people of Southeast Colorado, and I will fight every day to make sure that funding for the conduit continues.”
