Congressman Salazar announces $157,639 in funding for affordable housing in La Junta

Funding to help low-income families find affordable housing option

WASHINGTON, DC – Today U.S. Congressman Salazar announced that $157,639 has been allocated for the La Junta and Otero County Housing Authority. The funding will be used to maintain and upgrade 86 public housing units in the region. The funding comes from the federal Housing and Urban Development’s Capital Fund program, which provides funds annually via a formula to approximately 3,200 public housing agencies across the country.

Congressman Salazar offered the following comment on the funding:

“This funding will help provide housing for low-income families, for the disabled and for seniors in places like La Junta. I’m glad to have helped make this funding available and I will continue to provide safe, affordable housing to keep the fabric of our community strong.”

Tony Mascarenas, Executive Director of the La Junta and Otero County Housing Authority
offered the following comment on the funding:

“This is going to help us catch up a little bit. Helps update with green items, new flooring, that kind of thing, updating and maintaining the units we have. We have approximately 86 units that were built with HUD funds in 1973 in the city of La Junta. This funding will go toward deferrend maintenance and renovation work.”

Public housing agencies may use Capital Fund grants for development, financing, modernization, and management improvements. The Office of Capital Improvements provides technical assistance to public housing agencies as well as to HUD Field Offices relating to development, financing, modernization, and management improvements of public housing developments. It prepares quarterly reports to Congress on the status of the obligation and expenditure of Capital Fund grants and implements the statutory sanctions for public housing agencies that are in noncompliance with the statutory deadlines.

For information on this funding contact Tony Mascarenas, Executive Director of the La Junta and Otero County Housing Authority at (719) 384-9055.
