WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. John Salazar (CO-3) made the following statement after President Bush’s threat to veto the Agriculture Disaster Assistance And Western States Emergency Unfinished Business Appropriations Act of 2007.

The measure, H.R. 2207, would compensate Colorado farmers and ranchers for their losses during the recent back-to-back blizzards that struck parts of southeastern Colorado.  Thousands of cattle were lost and farms were buried under the snow for several weeks.  The blizzards follow several years of drought that have put considerable economic strain on Colorado’s agricultural community.

“This is just another example of how out of touch President Bush is with the working men and women of our country – especially our farmers and ranchers who work hard every day to put food on our table. I am deeply disappointed in this administration’s lack of compassion for the American farmer and rancher.

“I hope the President will reconsider his veto threat.  Despite his constant rejection of our agricultural community and their needs, I will continue to work hard in finding alternative solutions to help compensate our farmers and ranchers in southeastern Colorado.”
