Congressman Salazar announces $215,842 in funding for affordable housing in Walsenburg

Funding to help low-income families find affordable housing option

WASHINGTON, DC – Today U.S. Congressman Salazar announced that $215,842 has been allocated for the Walsenburg Housing Authority. The funding will be used to maintain and upgrade 129 public housing units in Huerfano County. The funding comes from the federal Housing and Urban Development’s Capital Fund program, which provides funds annually via a formula to approximately 3,200 public housing agencies across the country.

Congressman Salazar offered the following comment on the funding:

“This funding will help provide housing for low-income families, for the disabled and for seniors in places like Walsenburg. I’m glad to have helped make this funding available and I will continue to provide safe, affordable housing to keep the fabric of our community strong.”

Walsenburg Housing Authority Executive Director David Mockmore offered the following comment on the funding:

“Without capital funds everything goes to pot real quick. We just can’t allow that. Our units today are better than when they were build. We constantly maintain them. It’s an ongoing thing. This capital funding is great. Helps us continue to do preventative maintenance.  This money is always used for upkeep on our units, capital improvements. I believe that this funding will be going toward some plumbing maintenance on the units.”

Public housing agencies may use Capital Fund grants for development, financing, modernization, and management improvements. The Office of Capital Improvements provides technical assistance to public housing agencies as well as to HUD Field Offices relating to development, financing, modernization, and management improvements of public housing developments. It prepares quarterly reports to Congress on the status of the obligation and expenditure of Capital Fund grants and implements the statutory sanctions for public housing agencies that are in noncompliance with the statutory deadlines.

For information on this funding contact David Mockmore, Executive Director of the Walsenburg Housing Authority at 719-738-2720.
