Southern Colorado Cemetery Bill Passes Out Of House Veterans’ Affairs Committee

Bill Moves To House Floor For Consideration

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee unanimously passed U.S. Rep. John Salazar’s national cemetery bill out of committee.

“Today’s vote was a win for Colorado veterans,” said Rep. Salazar.

“Requiring the Department of Veterans Affairs to establish the Southern Colorado National Cemetery is a fitting tribute to those Americans who have served our nation with honor.”

The bill creates a new national cemetery for Southern Colorado veterans that would be located in the Pikes Peak region. Currently, the state has the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver and the Fort Lyon National Cemetery near Las Animas.

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that there are approximately 150,000 veterans located in Southern Colorado.  For years, veterans groups have listed the addition of a cemetery in Southern Colorado as one of their top priorities.

Salazar, the only military veteran in the Colorado congressional delegation, has met with local veterans groups to build support for this legislation. Several veterans’ organizations have endorsed the Salazar bill including the Colorado chapters of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the Association for Service Disabled Veterans.

Salazar’s bill, H.R. 1660, now moves to the House floor for consideration.
