National Cemetery Bill Voted Unanimously Out Of committee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs unanimously passed U.S. Rep. John Salazar’s national cemetery bill out of committee.

The bill creates a new national cemetery for veterans across Southern Colorado that would be located in the Pikes Peak region. Currently, the state has Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver and the Fort Lyon National Cemetery near Las Animas.

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that there are approximately 150,000 veterans located in Southern Colorado.

Salazar, the only military veteran in the Colorado delegation, has met with veterans from across the state to build support for this legislation. Several of the organizations that have endorsed his bill include the Colorado chapters of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the Association for Service Disabled Veterans.

The bill, H.R. 1660, now moves to the full committee for consideration.
