San Luis Valley to Receive $50,000 for Energy Assistance

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative John Salazar announced today that Energy Outreach Colorado, the state’s only nonprofit that raises funds for energy assistance, is going to provide an additional $50,000 to help limited income residents of the San Luis Valley hard hit by extreme cold temperatures and rising energy costs.

“I am very proud of, and I would like to personally thank, Energy Outreach Colorado for responding to the need of San Luis Valley residents.  In one of the coldest winters on record, we must all take care of our friends and neighbors to make sure everyone stays warm.  Energy Outreach Colorado has been serving Colorado for over 20 years and they clearly understand the value of community,” said Rep. John Salazar.

The $50,000 will be distributed through Energy Outreach Colorado’s partner agency, Alamosa-based La Puente.  These emergency funds are on top of the $200,000 in energy bill assistance grants made to La Puente this year by Energy Outreach.  Payments are made as direct payments to a recipient’s utility company.

“We share Congressman Salazar’s concerns about the health and safety of residents trying to stay warm during long periods of cold temperatures,” said Skip Arnold, executive director of Energy Outreach Colorado.  “Our goal is to help all Coloradans be able to afford home energy so they don’t have to suffer without energy or do without other basic necessities to keep their heat on.”

In total across the state, Energy Outreach Colorado plans to distribute at least $7.55 million in energy assistance this heating season.  Of that, $5.4 million goes to its emergency assistance network and $2.15 million goes to support the Colorado Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP).
