Congressman Salazar announces $78,659 in federal funding to improve Grand Junction bus safety

Funding will help make new North Avenue pullouts ADA accessible

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman John Salazar announced that $78,659 in federal funding has been allocated to help make Grant Junction’s North Avenue safer for mass transit users, other drivers and pedestrians. Currently, the Mesa County Regional Transportation Planning Office/Grand Valley Metropolitan Planning Office is in the review process for the creation of four bus “pull-outs” on North Avenue. These pull-outs will allow buses to pull off the street into a safer area to pick up passengers. The federal funding announced today will help fund the process of making those pull-outs compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Congressman Salazar offered the following comment on the funding:

“This funding will improve bus service for folks in Grand Junction and will make North Avenue a bit safer for all our citizens. I’m glad to have supported this effort and I will continue to support efforts like these, efforts that improve our mass-transit systems and provide employment for hard-working Coloradoans.”

Kathy Young, Transportation Planner for the Mesa County Regional Transportation Planning Office/Grand Valley Metropolitan Planning Office offered the following comment on the funding:

"This funding will help improve safety for both the transit as well as the traveling public. We've had several rear end accidents in that area. It will also help with the flow of traffic in that busy corridor…Design work is already done for this project and now we’re just waiting for permit approvals from CDOT. Once we get those we’ll put it out to bid. "
