Congressman Salazar announces $1.5 million in stimulus funding for new Grand Valley Transit facility

WASHINGTON, DC –Today, U.S. Congressman John Salazar announced that $ 1,538,694 in federal funding has been allocated for the construction of a new maintenance facility to improve Grand Valley Transit operations. Funding for the project comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 which Congressman Salazar worked to pass in the U.S. House of Representatives.

This project will use $1,538,694 in stimulus funds for the construction of a new maintenance facility for Grand Valley Transit in Whitewater on land owned by Mesa County. This facility will replace the existing facility located in downtown Grand Junction. It will provide bus parking, staff and delivery parking, parts storage, meeting safety requirements, and provide necessary equipment, facilities, and room for maintenance activities. The facility will include three maintenance bays, a wash bay and a lube bay. It will also include a break room, tool storage, fleet parts storage, and oil storage.

On the funding for the new Grand Valley Transit facility, Congressman Salazar offered the following comment :

“I am glad to have helped secure the funding for this addition to the Grand Valley Transit system. I know this new facility will help Mesa County continue its efforts to provide safe and efficient mass transit for the region,” said Congressman Salazar. “I will continue to work to provide necessary funding for projects like this one; projects that improve our infrastructure and provide jobs for hard working people on the West Slope.”

Mesa County Regional Services Director Tom Fisher offered the following comment on the funding:

“We’ve had this project under planning for a long time. It’s needed to increase the overall efficiency of Grand Valley Transit. This project is ready to go, it’s environmentally cleared and we’re excited to use Recovery Act funding to move project forward this year.”
