Congressman Salazar will work to create Chimney Rock National Monument

WASHINGTON, DC – On a visit to the Chimney Rock Archeological Area on Tuesday, June 30,   Congressman John Salazar announced his intention to help create a national monument designation for the archaeological site. Salazar was visiting the area to review the progress being made with the $241,178 federal appropriation he secured through the Save America’s Treasures program. The Save America's Treasures funding is being used to stabilize and preserve Chimney Rock Pueblo. 

During the tour, Congressman Salazar expressed his hope and desire to help the area acquire a national monument designation.

“I am very supportive of creating a national monument for Chimney Rock,” said Congressman Salazar. “It will help preserve this important site and will increase tourist traffic through the Grand Circle region and bring tourist dollars to Archuleta County. We’re now working with the Forest Service and the community to determine the best way to proceed.”

Chimney Rock is a San Juan National Forest Archaeological Area located between Durango and Pagosa Springs. It is managed for archaeological protection, public interpretation, and education. Its care, protection, and preservation are shared by the USDA Forest Service and the public.
