Salazar to Host Meeting Friday on Colorado’s 2008 Wheat Harvest

Washington, DC – Tomorrow, United States Congressman John Salazar will host a roundtable discussion – bringing together officials from the rail and wheat industries - to address transportation concerns for Colorado’s wheat harvest.

In 2007, a significant shortage of rail cars led to serious transportation problems for Colorado wheat.  After years of drought, Colorado had a strong harvest in 2007 but could not move the wheat due to a lack of rail service.   At one point, there were over 10 million bushels of grain on the ground – exposed to the elements – in addition to full elevators, resulting in an emergency order from the Governor of Colorado.

Congressman Salazar is bringing both parties of interest together to ensure a smooth 2008.

Who: Congressman John Salazar, Colorado Wheat Growers, BNSF, Union Pacific, and the Nebraska, Kansas & Colorado Railway

What: Discussion of 2007 transportation problem and measures to sufficiently handle this 2008 wheat harvest.

When: Friday, June 13th at 1pm MST

Where: LAVWCD Building, Rocky Ford, 801 Swink Avenue, Rocky Ford, CO  81067
