Salazar announces new pilot program to expand medical treatment for veterans in the Glenwood Springs area

Telemedicine uses modern technology to help heal those who have served

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman John Salazar announced today that over $7 million in federal funding has been designated for the creation of Veterans Affairs Medical Telehealth Outreach Clinics in the Western United States, one of which will be located in Glenwood Springs. The clinic is intended to serve veterans in Garfield, Eagle and Pitkin counties. Currently, veterans from these counties must travel to the Grand Junction VA Hospital for even minor medical needs. The goal of the new telehealth pilot program is to use modern technology to save veterans time and travel expenses for certain treatments.

Telehealth is the delivery of health-related services and information via telecommunications technologies. Telehealth is an expansion of telemedicine, and unlike telemedicine (which more narrowly focuses on the curative aspect) it encompasses preventive, promotive and curative aspects. Telehealth was originally used to describe administrative or educational functions related to telemedicine, today telehealth stresses a myriad of technology solutions.

Congressman Salazar is a veteran who currently sits on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs. Prior to that appointment, he served on the Veterans Affairs Committee. He offered the following comment on the new Glenwood Springs Telehealth Outreach Clinic:

“As a veteran who has served his fellow veterans for his entire congressional career it always hurts to hear about vets who are forced to travel long distances to get basic care. I hope the Glenwood Springs telehealth program will achieve its goal of making life and medical treatments easier for those who have served our country with honor.”
