Rep. Salazar Selected For Democracy Assistance Commission

 
 

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. –U.S. Rep. John Salazar (CO-3) was appointed to serve on the bipartisan House Democracy Assistance Commission.  The commission works with governments in emerging democracies around the world to help strengthen their democratic institutions.

“The United States Congress is the world’s oldest existing democratic assembly.  It is the best institution to guide and instill democracy around the world,” Rep. Salazar said. “This commission will help promote the American ideals we all enjoy – freedom, liberty and justice.”

As a member of the House Democracy Assistance Commission, John Salazar will work with the parliaments of selected countries that have established or are developing democratic parliaments, provide expert advice to members and staff of the parliaments of such countries, and make recommendations to the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) regarding the provision of needed material assistance to improve the efficiency and transparency of their work.

The Commission will study and report to Congress annually on the feasibility of such assistance programs to the countries selected. It also declares that the countries studied should reflect a geographic diversity and, over time, include countries from each of the following regions: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, and the Western Hemisphere.
