Rep. Salazar Part of U.S. Delegation to Study

Transportation Safety in Europe

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative John T. Salazar is in the United Kingdom, France, and Spain this week as part of a United States Delegation examining transportation and safety in European cities that have found their mass transportation systems victims of terrorist attacks and attempted terrorist attacks in recent years.

The U.S. Delegation will be visited by TTCI(UK) in London – a wholly owned subsidiary of the Transportation Technology Center, Inc., in Pueblo, Colorado. Like its parent company, TTCI(UK) includes extensive testing facilities and a highly skilled staff of engineers and technicians. TTCI(UK) provides services to the European Union and offers full scale testing, dynamic modeling, performance monitoring, instrumentation, safety performance, technical consulting and feasibility of Europe’s mass transit systems.

“It is vital that Members of Congress learn about the procedures being implemented worldwide in our efforts to ensure we have the safest and most reliable transportation infrastructure possible,” said Rep. Salazar. “As a member of the House Committee on Transportation, I have worked to ensure that TTCI is the foremost transportation testing facility in the world, and to have it in Pueblo is reason to be proud. ”

The U.S. Delegation will visit with foreign leaders and senior transportation officials, and tour select sites. Recent subway and train attacks in London and Madrid highlight the vulnerabilities that exist in rail transportation systems. Rep. Salazar has expressed concern that the Department of Homeland Security currently does not have the proper testing facilities to deal with such threats.

The delegation will be touring transit systems in both London and Barcelona, with a focus on their security. They plan to visit the security control room for the Tube in particular (the hub for the security camera system). Meeting with Transport London they’ll be able to learn about both their safety and security systems. This trip is particularly timely, as a few weeks ago Spanish authorities reportedly broke up a terrorist attempt to attack Barcelona’s transit system.

“As a member of the Transportation Committee, one of my primary responsibilities is to ensure all Americans that we have the safest, most reliable transportation network in the world,” Rep. Salazar added.

The Transportation Technology Center Inc. manages the Federal Railroad Administrations’ Transportation Technology Center (TTC), located 21 miles northeast of Pueblo, Colorado. This 52-square mile site operates with a vast array of specialized testing facilities and railways. TTC is used by the Federal Railroad Administration to conduct significant research and development on rail safety.
