Congressman Salazar Supports Scientific Progress

Salazar Votes for Bi-partisan Stem Cell Research Legislation

WASHINTON, DC – Congressman John T. Salazar (CO-3) provided the following comment today in support of legislation to guide the development of stem cell research.

“The public debate over the merits and ethics of stem cell research has a more personal meaning for me. As a practicing Catholic, I believe we need to strike a balance between what is morally right and scientifically sound.

“I will never forget my own father’s battle against Alzheimer’s and how his slow deterioration impacted our family.  If there is a possibility to replace that pain and hardship with hope for the future – not just for one family, but the possibility that we can improve millions of lives – then we must explore responsible research options.

“With federal funding and oversight of embryonic stem cell research, we can make sure that scientific progress goes forward under strict, ethically grounded guidelines.”

Salazar supports bi-partisan stem cell research legislation: HR 810, The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 introduced by Congressman Mike Castle (R-DE) and Congresswoman Diana DeGette (D-CO); and HR 2520, The Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005 introduced by Congressman Smith (R-NJ).
