PALLONE ANNOUNCES $1.3 MILLION FOR

ASBURY PARK POLICE DEPARMENT

Washington, D.C. --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., announced today that the Asbury Park Police Department will receive $1.37 million to hire or retain five police officers at the department. The funds were awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act under the Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).

The COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP) grants will provide 100 percent of entry-level salary and benefits for three years for newly-hired, full-time sworn officers, or rehired officers who have been laid off, or are scheduled to be laid off as a result of local budget cuts. Police departments receiving the grants will then be required to retain the grant-funded positions for a fourth year.

"During these difficult economic times, state and local governments are experiencing massive budget cuts, causing our trusted police officers to be laid off," Pallone said. "This funding provides much-needed support to state and local governments and will help the Asbury Park Police Department add or retain the manpower needed to fight crime more effectively and keep our streets safe."

Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder today announced that 1,046 law enforcement agencies will receive $1 billion in grants to fund the hiring and rehiring of 4,699 law enforcement officers.
