PALLONE SECURES $2.4 MILLION FOR UMDNJ'S

CANCER INSTITUTE OF NEW JERSEY

Washington, D.C. --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) announced that the U.S. House of Representatives approved a Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 Defense Appropriations conference report yesterday that included $2.4 million for University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey's (UMDNJ) Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ).

The conference report reconciles differences between House and Senate bills that were passed earlier this year.  The final legislation now goes to the President's desk for his signature.

CINJ is the state’s first and only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center.  In addition to being one of the fastest-growing cancer centers in the country, CINJ has one of the largest cancer networks, consisting of hospitals and community physicians.  This network is used to disseminate CINJ's validated research discoveries and developments more rapidly into the community.

The New Jersey congressman said the funds will be used to continue the Dean and Betty Gallo Prostate Cancer Center's phenomenal work in the area of prostate cancer, support the development of the Center for Bioinformatics, which working to change the way we treat and prevent cancer, and provide cutting edge treatment and prevention of cancer at the Center for Imaging, Structure and Function.

"New Jersey leads the nation in prostate cancer incidence and death rates, and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey is fast becoming one of the nation's top cancer centers," Pallone said.  "The funds approved this week by the Congress will allow the Center to continue its progress of preventing, treating and curing a disease that affects millions of Americans."

The $2.4 million approved this week will allow CINJ to fulfill its responsibility to the people of New Jersey to provide outstanding patient care, professional and lay education, access to state-of-the-art clinical trials, and community outreach through cancer prevention efforts.

The New Jersey congressman requested the funds for the project earlier this year.  The 2008 fiscal year officially began on October 1, 2007.
