PALLONE: $970,000 FOR SHARK RIVER DREDGING

Washington, D.C. --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., issued the following statement today following the announcement that the Shark River Inlet, Belmar, will receive $970,000 through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The funds will be used for maintenance dredging of the inlet, which the Army Corps of Engineers has already started work on. In the past, the inlet has experienced shoaling issues, which has given way to an unsafe environment for local mariners. Pallone has been working with the Army Corps to try and alleviate the situation and has called on the Corps to dredge the inlet when it is needed.

"Because of the Shark River Inlet's ongoing shoaling issues, dredging the inlet will make it safer for boaters to navigate," Pallone said. "It's a good use of Recovery Act funds to protect boaters and place much-needed sand on the beaches of Avon-by-the-Sea."

The project includes removing sand build ups at the entrance of the inlet, which will make the channel safer for passage and digging deposition basins along the sides of the channel, which should reduce how often future dredging is needed, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. The sand will be removed and will in turn replenish the beach of Avon-by-the-Sea, where it will combat erosion, provide added coastal storm damage reduction and aid tourism on the Jersey shore.
