ARMENIAN CAUCUS BRIEFED BY AMBASSADOR ORDWAY ON RECENT U.S.-ARMENIAN ECONOMIC TASK FORCE MEETINGS

Ambassador Unveils Website Dedicated To Armenian Aid Projects

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Reps. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), co-chairman of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill today with U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Ordway regarding the recent meetings of the US-Armenia Economic Task Force (USATF). Members attending the meeting included: U.S. Reps. Shelley Berkley (D-NV), Phil English (R-PA), Steve Rothman (D-NJ) and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA).

"I want to thank Ambassador Ordway for taking the time to brief the Caucus on the USATF and the ongoing US-Armenia relationship," Pallone said. "His outreach efforts to the community and Members of Congress have been instrumental to showing the Diaspora the good work the US Embassy is doing with the funds that Congress appropriates."

Ambassador Ordway updated Caucus members on the Fall 2003 meetings of the USATF that concluded on November 5 after two days of productive discussion and review in Washington, D.C. The meetings, the latest in a series of semiannual reviews of bilateral assistance programs and economic policy, focused on issues related to the fight against corruption and U.S. technical assistance in the areas of economic development, law enforcement, international trade and energy. The participants drew up a list of specific actions to guide economic cooperation between the two countries for the near future.

During todays briefing, Ambassador Ordway also unveiled the "U.S. Government Assistance to Armenia" website. This site provides information regarding the more than 90 million dollars worth of assistance programs administered in Armenia during FY 2003. Users may search assistance projects by geographic region and by category or type. The site also contains links to most projects so that users can learn more about the U.S. agency that sponsors these programs. The website will be updated periodically and can be accessed at http://www.usa.am/assistance.

"The information contained in this new website shows the broad spectrum of assistance programs that we undertake with the cooperation of the Armenian Government and underscores the importance the U.S. Government places on its relationship with Armenia," the Ambassador said.

The U.S. Government USATF delegation was led by Ambassador Carlos Pascual and included U.S. Ambassador John Ordway and USAID-Armenia Director Keith Simmons as well as a number of other Washington-based U.S. Government officials. Vartan Khachatryan, Minister of Finance and Economy, headed the Armenian delegation. Participants included delegates from the Armenian Ministries of Finance and Economy, Foreign Affairs and Energy as well as representatives from the Central Bank and the Customs Administration.
