HOLT, PALLONE ANNOUNCE $1 MILLION FOR MIDDLESEX IN EPA BROWNFIELDS FUNDING

Program Helps Clean Contaminated Sites

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Reps. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Rush Holt (D-NJ) announced today that the Middlesex County Improvement Authority will receive $1 million to help clean up contaminated and polluted sites. The funding comes from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Brownfields Program.

Middlesex is receiving an assessment grant to conduct environmental site assessments at a minimum of five sites in the City of Perth Amboy and the Township of Woodbridge. Funding will also be used to support community education and outreach activities.

"The Brownfields program has served communities well, helping make them healthier and more livable. I’m pleased Middlesex will be able to use this funding to identify sites that need improvement. This is a wise investment of funding.”

"This funding is essential to help clean up contaminated sites in Middlesex County to ensure that the environment and surrounding residents are kept safe from pollutants," Pallone said. "I am happy to see Middlesex County receive this critical brownfields funding."

Since 1995, the EPA's Brownfields Program has provided funding to help communities prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. According to the EPA, A brownfield is a property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
