PALLONE STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA'S EXECUTIVE ORDER ON STEM CELL RESEARCH

Washington, D.C. --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, issued the following statement praising President Obama for signing an executive order lifting the Bush administration's restrictions on federally funded human embryonic stem cell research:

"Today, President Obama gave hope to millions of Americans suffering from debilitating diseases when he lifted absurd federal stem cell funding restrictions instituted by the Bush administration.  The president's action is a critical step in discovering cures for the chronic diseases and medical conditions that so many of our friends and family members suffer from.

"When the Bush administration refused to act, states like New Jersey moved forward with their own initiatives to advance embryonic stem cell research, but the funding was hard to come by due to the budget deficits many states now face.  Thanks to today's action, New Jersey and other states will no longer have to go it alone.  Federal funds will now be available to develop both medical advances that save lives and important research opportunities that create jobs."
