Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. announced on Thursday economic recovery funds for New Jersey communities that will create clean energy jobs, reduce energy bills and improve energy efficiency. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will provide formula grants for projects that reduce total energy use and fossil fuel emissions, and improve energy efficiency.
"One of our top priorities for recovering from this harsh recession is to put people to work and one of the best ways to do that is with clean energy jobs," said Congressman Pallone. "These grants will produce paychecks for workers, stimulate local economies, provide savings for consumers by reducing energy bills and help lead us to energy independence. It is also important that we look to the future by creating 21st Century jobs that will last well beyond the recession. This is a direct investment in our economy and an investment in smart energy."
Funding for state, city, and county governments in the state includes:
Towns:
Edison $999,700
Manalapan $155,300
Marlboro $162,300
Middletown $610,800
New Brunswick $538,100
Old Bridge $580,300
Piscataway $528,800
Plainfield $186,300
Sayreville $165,400
Counties:
Monmouth $4,225,800
Somerset $788,300
Union $2,485,400
The funding will support energy audits and energy efficiency retrofits in residential and commercial buildings, the development and implementation of advanced building codes and inspections, and the creation of financial incentive programs for energy efficiency improvements. To ensure accountability, the Department of Energy will provide guidance to and require grant recipients to report on the number of jobs created or retained, energy saved, renewable energy capacity installed, greenhouse gas emissions reduced, and funds leveraged.
