Washington, D.C. --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) announced today the release of federal capital improvement grants for housing authorities in New Jersey, including New Brunswick, South Amboy, Edison and Highland Park, that will put people to work improving housing facilities in local communities. Allocated from the Recovery Act, the targeted money will give housing agencies the resources to rebuild and repair public housing units, creating jobs and improving energy efficiency in the process.
The Plainfield Housing Authority will receive $1,038,896 and the Franklin Housing Authority will receive $178,771.
"These funds will put people to work and make long-needed improvements at the same time," Pallone said. "The immediate impact will spur economic activity and the longer-term benefits will go to better homes for local residents and more efficient use of energy."
Distributed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through its Capital Fund Program, the funding helps housing authorities repair and modernize the public housing in their communities, including large-scale improvements such as new roofs, replacing plumbing and electrical systems, and upgrading energy efficiency standards.
"The money will be put to good use and it will be put to use quickly," Pallone said. "The housing authorities have identified needs and local workers are ready to go to work."
