PALLONE INVITES BAYSHORE AREA RESIDENTS TO JUNE 13TH MEETING ON NEW FEMA FLOOD MAPS

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) sent the following letter to his constituents living in the Bayshore inviting them to a meeting on June 13th regarding the new Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood maps.

June 12, 2008

Dear Resident:

Recently, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) proposed new Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps for the Bayshore area.  I have paid close attention to this process and share many of the concerns that I have heard from residents in communities all over my district.  With money getting tighter for working families throughout New Jersey and the costs of goods rising across the country, I understand the burden that having to obtain flood insurance poses for your family.

To help explain the process of how these updated flood maps were developed and to give residents an opportunity to object to the new maps, FEMA and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will be hosting an open house on June 13 at the Bayshore Senior Center, located at 100 Main Street in Keansburg.  This meeting will run from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a formal presentation of the Map Modernization process beginning at 6 p.m.

It is imperative for residents whose home will be designated in a flood zone under the new maps to attend the meeting.  Representatives from FEMA and other agencies will be in attendance and available to speak with you on a one-on-one basis to answer any questions you may have.  The representatives will provide important information about obtaining the cheapest possible flood insurance under the program as well as information about the appeals process if you feel your home was wrongfully included in a flood zone.

The process of updating these flood maps is long, complicated, and can have lasting implications for your family.  It is also still in the early stages.  Therefore, it is particularly important that you gather as much information as possible about these new maps and what can be done to ensure that your home is accurately designated.  I will also be attending the June 13th open house and I look forward to seeing you there as well.

Sincerely,

FRANK PALLONE, JR.

Member of Congress
