"Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong opposition to CAFTA---another trade agreement that ships jobs overseas to countries where workers are exploited.
"How many American jobs do we have to ship overseas before Republicans wake-up and realize that free trade is not the same as fair trade? The American economy simply cannot benefit from an agreement with six countries whose combined purchasing power is equal to that of Columbus, Ohio.
"The people of New Jersey have waited for free trade to work for them since the passage of NAFTA. Instead, they've seen more than 104,000 manufacturing jobs lost, a 20-percent cut in the manufacturing sector. These agreements also haven't helped our nation's trade deficit, which has increased 1,200 percent, from $9 billion in 1993 to $111 billion last year.
"Once again, President Bush sides with his corporate friends who can't wait to ship jobs to Central America as a way to increase their profit margin. And yet again, the big loser is the American worker."
