"Although I am unable to join you in Trenton today, know that I am standing with you in Washington -- fighting to keep our Supreme Court pro-choice. We have a real battle on our hands, but it is one worth fighting.
"Reproductive choice and the protection of Roe vs. Wade are among the top issues facing the future of our Supreme Court. Since the 7 to 2 decision was announced in January 1973 Social Conservatives have made overturning Roe v. Wade their primary mission. Unfortunately, thanks to Republican administrations over the last two decades, support for choice on the highest court has fallen.
"Today, I'm concerned that we don't know if Roberts will stand with the present majority in upholding Roe v. Wade, or if he'll side with Rehnquist, Thomas and Scalia. His legal record is inconsistent---fighting to overturn Roe on behalf of the first Bush administration in the 90's, but then stating that Roe v. Wade was the "settled law of the land" during his confirmation hearing two years ago. As a federal court of appeals judge, Roberts could get away with answers like that, but during his Senate confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court he'll have to explain the inconsistencies in his record because on the highest court in the land he certainly will be in a position to overturn legal precedents.
"It is critical that all of you continue this fight -- to let the Senate know loud and clear that we will not allow a Supreme Court Justice to be confirmed who does not stand for choice. Fortunately, you know that both of our Senators, Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg, are with you and will serve us proud during this confirmation battle.
"I also ask that you join me in helping to educate the people of our state and our nation about what is at stake. The American people cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. The choice before us is too critical.
"Again, I am sorry that I could not join you in person today, but know that I am still marching with you." |
