PALLONE SECURES $475,000 FOR SOUTH AMBOY INTERMODAL TRANSPORTATION STATION

Washington, D.C. --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) announced that the U.S. House of Representatives approved a Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 omnibus bill today that includes his request of $475,000 for the South Amboy Intermodal Transportation Station to improve access, increase safety and enhance passenger accommodations at the facility.

Yesterday, the House approved a $410 billion spending bill that combines nine appropriations bills into one omnibus bill funding domestic programs and foreign operations for FY 2009, which officially began on October 1, 2008.  The bill now goes to the Senate for its approval before heading to the president's desk for his signature.

Pallone says the $475,000 in federal funds will be used to continue the second and final phase of the construction of an elevated platform, the addition of handicapped accessibility and the facilitation of overall safety upgrades to the station.

"New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the nation with severe automobile traffic. By approving this funding, we are investing in transportation projects that will allow us to reduce congestion, improve air quality and continue economic development," Pallone said.  "The South Amboy Intermodal Transportation Station is a unique transportation hub that brings rail, bus, ferry, auto and pedestrian traffic all into one center and I commend the House for funding this important project."

The $475,000 approved by the House today follows an additional $1.75 million that Pallone has secured since Fiscal Year 2005 for this project.  Both state and federal funds have been used over the years in constructing the South Amboy Intermodal Hub.

Pallone requested the funds earlier this year in a formal request to the House Appropriations Transportation and Housing & Urban Development (THUD) Subcommittee.
