PALLONE ANNOUNCES $20 MILLION FEDERAL
GRANT FOR LONG BRANCH HOUSING AUTHORITY

Long Branch, N.J. --- The Long Branch Housing Authority (LBHA) has been awarded a Federal HOPE VI Revitalization Grant in the amount of  $20 million, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) announced today.  The award is the culmination of a months-long application process by LBHA with assistance from the New Jersey congressman.

The funds will enable LBHA to revitalize Seaview Manor, Grant Court, Garfield Court and Garfield Addition public housing developments in Long Branch.  The four sites, which currently contain 244 units, will be demolished and replaced with 233 units of public housing, 11 affordable rental units and 31 affordable homeownership units.

The revitalized development will provide housing and programs that will foster self-sufficiency among residents with a range of incomes.  Programs offered for residents will include adult education, job training and apprenticeships.

"I congratulate the Long Branch Housing Authority for developing a comprehensive revitalization plan that will address the city's affordable housing needs for the future," Pallone said.  "These federal funds will allow LBHA not only to create a modern housing development for its residents, but will also create a new job training and education environment that will have an enormous impact on the community it serves."

"We are so honored to have received this $20,000,000 grant, and appreciate Rep. Pallone's assistance in securing it," said Tyrone Garrett, Executive Director of LBHA.  "We are the only housing authority in New Jersey to receive a HOPE VI grant this year, and feel this is a great indication of where our organization is headed."

The Federal Revitalization of Distressed Public Housing program, known as HOPE VI, provides grants of up to $20 million to local public housing authorities to renovate or demolish existing public housing and replace it with mixed-income housing.

Since its creation in 1992, 223 HOPE VI revitalization grants have been awarded to public housing authorities, helping to transform many severely distressed neighborhoods.  The program is included in the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) agency in Washington, DC.
