PALLONE ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR EDISON RAIL STATION PARK AND RIDE

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) announced today that the Edison Rail Station Park and Ride will receive $11 million to expand the station's parking lot by 500 spaces.  The funding is provided through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, which provided New Jersey Transit with $342 million for transit projects in northern and central New Jersey.

The Edison Park and Ride expansion project will result in additional parking at this location.  A third lot will be constructed on the outbound side of the Northeast Corridor right-of-way with access from Kilmer Road.  Lot 1, on the inbound side, will be repaved and restriped, and all handicapped spaces will be located in this area.

In addition, the project will include a plaza in front of the station to provide passengers with seating areas.  After the expansion of the parking lot is complete, there will be a total of 816 spaces available at the Edison Rail Station, more than doubling the capacity currently available.

"The expansion of the Edison Rail Park and Ride parking lot will provide greater access for commuters, boost ridership on NJ Transit trains and relieve clogged streets," Pallone said.  "This expansion is ready for construction now and is the kind of investment we need to make to create jobs and spur economic growth through critical infrastructure projects."

New Jersey Transit anticipates breaking ground on this project in late spring or early summer 2009. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2010.
