Pallone Announces $5.1 Million Grant to Upgrade New Jersey Libraries |

Long Branch, NJ — Congressman Frank Pallone (NJ-06) Tuesday announced New Jersey’s public libraries will receive $5.1 million to expand public accessibility to broadband internet. The project will fund the purchase of computers for 47 libraries, upgrade connectivity at 79 libraries and provide workforce development programs, job search assistance and other online resources at 365 libraries across the state. With increased demand, many libraries are unable to keep pace with the demand for broadband access.
“Libraries throughout my district are a lifeline for those who have been adversely affected by tough economic times,” said Pallone. “More and more people are utilizing internet and other free services our local libraries provide to help them find jobs and refine their skills. With this grant money more people will have access to these free services.”
“This project will help to pave a road to economic recovery for our state by enabling New Jersey libraries to provide the access to the internet and free training to help get New Jersey residents back to work and stimulate the economic growth our state needs,” said Norma Blake, New Jersey State Librarian.
Pallone worked to support getting the funding for the libraries state wide. Programs like the Virtual Career Center at the Long Branch Public Library and the Job Search for Moms program at the Piscataway Public Library exemplify the best ways libraries are providing career assistance, Pallone said.
A consortium led by New Jersey’s community colleges will deliver training using its existing curriculum for library staff and job seekers.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation worked in partnership with New Jersey state libraries to provide matching funds for these grants. Nationwide, the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program distributed $7.3 billion. |
